The Holly Tree Hotel is a very special place to host your celebration with one of the best uninterrupted Sea Views in Scotland. The opportunity for some amazing backdrops for your wedding photos is just outstanding with the Hotel situated right on the shores of Loch Linnhe, with no roads to interrupt our views. We really have some stunning scenery with mountains, sea and our very own pier to provide some unique backgrounds for your wedding photos.
The hotel is a real home from home with our Captains Bar, our own decked sun terrace, stunning Sea View restaurant and cosy lounge. Both our restaurant and lounge have real log fires.
The Holly Tree is well renowned for our personal, friendly atmosphere and staff who are only to happy to assist in any way they can to make your Wedding Day just perfect.
We are open all year all day, every day.
Types of Weddings – Large or Small or something in between!
We have catered for all different types and sizes of weddings in the past from a marquee wedding for over two hundred people to an intimate wedding lunch for eight and lots in between. It is your day and everyone has different ideas of how they want to celebrate their marriage.
In essence however there are two very broad types of Weddings that we can host for you. The first are smaller weddings where, due to not taking up all of the bedrooms, you do not have exclusive use of the hotel, or larger weddings where all of the bedrooms are taken and you have opted for exclusive use of the whole hotel.
Suggested Wedding Itinerary
Here at The Holly Tree we can host Weddings for up to 90 guests for a sit down meal during the day, and a maximum of 120 guests in total in the evening. Due to the configuration of The Holly Tree any wedding for over 50 guests are only really possible with our exclusive use option.
For a rough idea on how your wedding celebrations could be planned here is a typical Highland Wedding at the Holly Tree Hotel:-
Arrive at your leisure and come and soak in our beautiful surroundings. Relax and enjoy the Company of each other and your friends and relations. Plenty time still for those final last minute details to be finalised, like last minute flower arrangements, who is going to be late- all the last minute family stuff.
We have extensive Local Information available at your fingertips both at our Reception and in your own bedroom. Enjoy a gentle stroll or cycle on the fantastic cycle path that runs right past our front door, or take a walk up the hillside behind us. You really don’t have to go very far to gaze in wonder at the fantastic mountains and sea around you.
Enjoy delicious dinner in one of the most romantic settings in Scotland! Either dine together, as a small group or as one large family! To ensure the smooth running of this evening, it would help us a lot if you could pre-order for dinner for any tables over eight people.
We often find that people really enjoy the night before their wedding just catching up with friends and family who have often travelled far to come and share your special day.
Awake in your luxurious bedroom and enjoy in the fabulous views of mountain and sea around you. Join us for a fantastic and freshly cooked Full Scottish Breakfast. Even our porridge has just a smidgen of whisky liqueur! Allow yourselves to be pampered and spoilt and just enjoy your day after all those hard months of planning!
Normally weddings ceremonies happen in Scotland between Midday and 3.00 pm. As you can see below we have a wedding licence so you can get married at the Hotel or in any of the various local churches, all just a couple of miles away in Ballachulish.
Arrive back at the Hotel from a local church or indeed having just got married at our lochside pier or in the Hotel, and enjoy a Champagne Reception with some delicious homemade canapés. We have had the Bride and Groom arrive in the past by quite alternative methods of transport ranging from sailing boat, speedboat, horse drawn carriage and even by helicopter! The choice is yours! Mingle with your friends and family and be prepared to be photographed and fussed by all today!
With wedding photographs often taking a couple of hours (hard to believe but they often do) you can then have a traditional Wedding Line up if you wish, and be piped into our Loch View restaurant by one of our local talented Pipers to commence your Wedding Banquet. A fantastic meal will then follow with obviously your own choice of food and wines as below. After the speeches are but a distant memory (the current trend is to have them before the meal so everyone can enjoy the food) dance the night away and enjoy the start of your new life together as husband and wife!
If you wish to invite additional guests for the evening reception then they usually arrive at around 7.30 pm with a band starting about 8.30pm. There are lots of bands who do a mixture of ceilidh music and disco or either – the choice is yours. Remember even with traditional Scottish Ceilidh music and dancing, the band will “call” out the dances and show anyone who wants to dance but doesn’t know how it goes how to do the dance. Anyone who has been to traditional Scottish ceilidh will tell you they are great fun.
With dancing till late usually a light finger buffet is served around 10.30 pm which allows everyone to have a break and some food to soak up the alcohol.
Our pier is the perfect setting to have a firework display later in the evening if you wish.
It used to be the tradition that the bride and groom leave the wedding before the end of the night but this tradition has now thankfully gone since they often missed out on a couple of fantastic hours of their wedding.
The last dance is usually around 12.45am and then taxis or buses can be arranged for anyone not staying in the hotel. It will have been a long memorable day but maybe a wee final dram in the Captains bar as a final celebration…..
The Wedding Ceremony and Wedding Licence
The Marriage Scotland) Act 2002 permits civil marriages to be solemnised at location other than registration offices. We are a registered, licenced wedding ceremony venue so the ceremony itself can take place either in our lounge, restaurant, bar, decked terrace or pier (weather permitting of course!) The licence allows you to choose Religious or Civil Ceremony conducted at the hotel, the choice is yours. We are within easy reach of local churches too if you wished to have your Wedding Ceremony conducted in a church and your celebrations at the hotel afterwards.
For civil ceremonies, no food or drink (including alcohol) may be served or consumed in the room where the wedding takes place for one hour prior to the ceremony, or during the ceremony itself.
Whichever kind of Wedding Ceremony you decide to choose, you must inform the Registrar in Fort William of your intentions and they require that you complete a marriage notice (Form M10) and submit these notices to them. They will also give you lots of advice on other paperwork that you may need to complete although we will of course help you with this. The Fort William Registrar contact details are:-
